Lighting and Power at Camp Without Carrying a Generator

Three kinds of light, one power plan, and the solar maths nobody prints on the box.

Camp gets dark earlier than you expect and stays dark longer than you planned for. Lighting is the least discussed and most consequential part of a campsite, because it determines how long the evening lasts — and the evening is the reason most people camp.

You need three kinds of light, not one big one

Almost everyone starts with one bright lantern and discovers it does not work. Here is why.

1. Personal light — a headlamp per person

Hands-free, aimed where you look. This is what you use to walk to the toilet, find something in a bag, or hold a pot while you pour. One per person is not a luxury; it is what stops the group being tethered to a single light source. A 350-lumen headlamp is more than enough — most of the time you will run it at a fraction of that.

2. Area light — one lantern for the table

A lantern gives 360-degree soft light and creates a centre of gravity for the evening. Put it in the middle of the table, at head height if you can hang it, and turn it down lower than you think. Bright light kills night vision and makes everything beyond the table feel darker than it is.

3. Ambient light — mark your space

String lights along guy lines do three jobs at once: they stop people tripping over lines in the dark, they make your tent findable across a busy campground, and they turn a patch of ground into a room. Solar-charged means no battery budget at all.

The lumens trap

Higher lumen numbers sell headlamps, but the number is measured at maximum output, which most lamps sustain for a short time before stepping down to protect the battery. What matters far more is the runtime at a usable level — usually 20–50 lumens for camp tasks. A lamp that holds 30 lumens for 40 hours beats one that flashes 500 for twenty minutes.

Use red light more than you think

Red light does not destroy dark adaptation the way white light does. Switch to red once it is properly dark and you will find you can see the whole campsite — and the stars — instead of only the circle in front of you.

It also makes you dramatically less annoying to everyone else at the campground. White light swung across a neighbouring tent at 11pm is the one genuine camping faux pas.

Power: work out your budget first

Rough real-world figures for a two-night trip:

  • Phone: 3,000–5,000 mAh per full charge. With airplane mode on and camera use, one charge usually lasts a full day.
  • Headlamp (rechargeable): 500–1,000 mAh per charge. On low, one charge covers several nights.
  • Lantern: 2,000–5,000 mAh per charge, depending on size and brightness.
  • Camera or GPS: 1,000–2,000 mAh per battery.

For two people over two nights, that is realistically 10,000–15,000 mAh of demand. A 20,000 mAh bank covers it comfortably with margin — and margin matters, because cold weather reduces usable battery capacity noticeably.

Honest arithmetic on solar

Solar panels are useful and routinely oversold. The numbers to hold in your head:

  • A small folding panel produces its rated output only in direct, perpendicular, unshaded midday sun. Angle, cloud, and haze all cut it hard.
  • In realistic conditions, expect roughly 40–60% of the rated figure across a full day.
  • Charging a 20,000 mAh bank from empty on a small panel takes multiple full sunny days, not an afternoon.

So the correct way to use solar is as a top-up, not a primary source. Arrive with everything fully charged from a wall socket. Use the panel to slow the decline, not to refill from zero. Framed that way, solar is genuinely useful. Framed as a generator replacement, it will disappoint you.

Cold kills batteries faster than use does

Lithium cells lose usable capacity as temperature drops — a bank that reads 60% at bedtime can read far less by dawn in near-freezing conditions. Sleep with your power bank and phone inside the sleeping bag on cold nights. They will hold charge and, marginally, warm your feet.

Where to put the lights

A layout that works, and takes two minutes to set up on arrival:

  • Lantern in the middle of the table, dimmed to about half.
  • String lights along the two guy lines people will walk near.
  • One small light left on low just inside each tent door, so nobody comes back to a black hole.
  • Headlamps in the same pocket of the same bag, every trip, so they are findable without a light.

That last one sounds trivial and is the single most useful habit on this list. Searching for a headlamp in the dark is the most avoidable frustration in camping.

What to leave at home

  • A second big lantern. Two bright area lights fight each other and flatten the space.
  • Anything that only takes proprietary batteries. If you cannot charge it from the same cable as everything else, it will end up dead.
  • Very high-output headlamps. They eat battery, blind your companions, and you will run them on low anyway.
  • Candles inside a tent. Ever.

The test of a good lighting setup

You can sit at the table at 10pm, see everyone's face, read a label without picking up a torch, walk to the toilet block without waking anyone, and still look up and see stars.

That is three lights and one power bank. It is not an expensive problem to solve, and solving it adds two or three hours to every evening you spend outdoors.
